4 Ways to Snap Better Photos of Children for a Blog

Photographing children can be tricky even for experienced photographers. Not all children react the same way to having their photos taken, and some may shy away from the camera, others may try to grab it, and yet others may make funny faces at it.

If you want to start to snap better photos of children for your blog, there are a few things that you should try:

  • Get down to their eye level

Snapping photos of children from your eye level means that you’ll constantly be looking down on them, which is not the best perspective. Try to get down to the eye-level of the child that you’re photographing, or to that of the tallest child in the group.

  • Watch, wait, and snap candid shots

The most compelling photos of children are almost always candid shots that are snapped when they are unaware of the camera and are distracted by something else or playing by themselves. To take these shots however you need to be prepared to watch and wait, getting them slowly used to the camera and playing with them until they do.

  • Don’t force them to smile

Many beginners try to coax children to smile before snapping photos, which often results in either an unnaturally forced smile or a funny face. Rather than trying to force children to smile by prompting them, you should snap photos of their natural expression – whatever it may be.

If you do want a photo of a child smiling, try to make it natural – by getting them to laugh by being funny, or by playing with them.

  • Keep it simple

As a rule you should try to keep the composition of your photos simple – to draw viewers directly to the child and make them the center of attention. In other words you should try to frame your shot so that it is as uncluttered as possible, and doesn’t distract viewers.

All these tips should help you to snap much better photos of children for your blog. However it does still help to be able to use post processing to edit and improve them after the fact.

In particular you may want to try applying artistic creative blur effects using Movavi Photo Focus. It is a specialized software that will let you learn how to blur a picture to draw focus to the child that you’re photographing.

The effects of creative blur can be compelling, and Movavi Photo Focus will let you determine what elements to keep in focus and what to blur out. It is possible to also apply effects such as bokeh or tilt-shit, and you could even add dynamic motion blur to your shots.

Suffice to say Movavi Photo Focus will let you use blur to come up with unique and interesting photos of children. The best part is it is incredibly easy to use, and you don’t need to have any prior experience to apply its effects to any of your photos.
