Marking My Calendar: How I Make Time My Friend

My daughter asked me yesterday about what superpower I’d like to have.  Without batting an eyelash, I told her I wanted to have the power to stop time.  She gave me a puzzled look, as I think she expected me to say, “the power to fly, or change shape”.  But I was so sure, more than being one of the Incredibles, I wanted to be able to stop time.

Time, it seems, passes by so quickly.  The hours turn to days, and then to months at lightning speed.    This morning, as I was moving my mouse around, looking at custom made calendars on http://www.overnightprints.com/calendars, I all the more wanted to have the power to control time.  If only I could freeze time as I pleased.

The nasty thing about time, is that it speeds past us whenever we’re having fun.  Time flies, they say.  Why does it do that when we’re at our happiest?   Is time sadistic by nature, and does it thrive on our misery?  I wonder why it doesn’t zoom past when you’re miserable!

We are feeble humans- that’s a reality.  We are bound by space and dear old time.  As much as we’d like to stretch time- to lengthen those times of romantic walks in the park, or theme park trips with the kids- we simply can’t.

To some extent, it is quite comforting that time passes by at its current rate.  It makes us cherish those wonderful moments even more, and gives hope to those in dire straits.  Knowing that “this too shall pass” sheds light on one’s suffering.

So I guess, I’ve come to terms with it, and have decided to just make time my friend.  Instead of battling wits with it, I’m going to dance with it and hold its hand (or should I say, hands- both the short and long hand!).

  1. For me, I always say that the days are long, but the years are short. I *always* have alot to do during my days and nights and it’s hard to fit it all in. But, then I turn around and it’s next year, and I’m like, “where did the time go?”

  2. This is all so true!

  3. Thanks so much for all this nice and free content.I can already imagine strategies after reading this article.

  4. I remember a series called heroes where the lead stars had power and one of the characters had the power to bend time and space and he ended up to be powerful because of his control over time. In reality, time is always limited so we just have to make the best of it.

  5. Well TIME is so fast and be not wasted since this is the only CHANCE to make our LIFE more MEANINGFUL.

  6. yeah time is really so fast, that is why we have to use it wisely and treasure every moment we are with our love ones

  7. Like they say , if you can’t beat them, join them. I have never thought of stopping time. Turning it back though – I have. Perhaps you’re having fun right now? Well, happy times or sad times they all will pass. Let’s just hope for a repeat of history, happy history.

  8. Ah ~ yes ~ time ~ great post ~ life ~ only constant we have is ‘change’ ~ Happy Thanksgiving ~ ArtMuse Dog is a she and she would love to have you cuddle her for a short time ~ she is very independent ~ ^_^

  9. That is funny ,I thought my family is the only one with super power in this world .My 4 yrs old son has a Super power Ben 10/Alien power, mom a “Super mom”, that means i can do everything, dad is “Super”. Every time we are into the mall, my son uses his super power, so we made this rule(me and dad) that we only use our power inside the house. We don’t want anybody to know our secret powers, lol.

Stopping time, I wish to do that once in a while too.time is so fast that sometimes we cannot adopt to changes.

  10. This is a great article! Perfect for what I’m feeling right now. Because it’s about to be December and it just feels like yesterday when 2012 started :O

  11. I agree! We wont be able to stop time. What we can do is make the most out of it.

  12. LindyLouMacinItaly says:

I understand exactly what you mean, as the end of yet another fast approaches, where did it go!?

  13. Your daughter asks the most interesting questions. Smart kid! :)

  14. True, the only way is to make time an ally. No point in trying to beat it, halt it or whatever. It’s something precious and fleeting that we have to really make very second count.

  15. You are so right. I’d stop time right now. It’s nice and quiet around here.

  16. Now I know why whenever I asked my parents what they wanted for Christmas as a child, they said “more time!” This is my first holiday season as a mom, and I feel the EXACT same.

  17. It does work better if you have time as a friend then a foe. Good on you!!

  18. I so agree with you! It’s funny…when your children are small and challenging, you wish time would hurry up and they would get just a little older. And then bam, they’re 14 and in high school!! lol. Happy Monday.

  19. You are a wise woman! You can never beat time, so you’ld better join it.

  20. so true TY for sharing your thoughts

  21. Getting educated with this is just very important. Thank you for this post.
