Caring For Children With Cancer

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, parents find themselves facing their fear of losing their child. These days such a diagnosis is not necessarily a death sentence because of the daily discoveries of science and medicine. Many patients and their families have experienced how oncology solutions are possible. Each success story brings promises of life and health to families struggling with childhood cancer.

Tumors occur in organs and tissues and are found in all age groups, including infants. The type of tumor and how it is treated can depend on where the tumor is located. A cancerous tumor is one that shows invasive properties. The cells break off and migrate to different tissues. Because the DNA is damaged, the cells have lost their ability to experience a natural cycle of birth and death. The end result is an over growth of cells that take over healthy cells, creating havoc in the diseased area. A begin tumor can often be left alone unless it interferes with the function of the nervous system and other organs. Once the cancer has been diagnosed exploring the different treatment options is essential to healing. One interesting fact is that children generally have a better response to treatments than adults.

One of the big differences between an adult cancer patient and a child is a child is still developing. Both children and adults have to replace the tissue destroyed by chemo and radiation therapy, but a child needs extra nutrition for their bodies to grow. Parents should consult with nutritionists and doctors to make sure the child is receiving enough protein. Carbohydrates are important, as well as enough fat to provide energy for growth and development. According to the American Cancer Society, children can need up to 90 percent more carbohydrates than a child without cancer. Other nutritional areas to consider are how chemo treatments can cause vomiting and diarrhea, creating dehydration in an already weak patient. Water becomes extremely important to keep the body lubricated and able to function. If a child cannot eat during their treatments, talking to a doctor or nutritionist who specializes in working with childhood cancer can provide solid information on how to work with the loss of appetite.

During the diagnostic and treatment phase of cancer, both the family and patient need support. In younger children, they often do not understand they are sick. The medical care they are undergoing can be frightening and seen as a form of punishment. While teens may experience a change in how their friends and teachers approach them. Parents need support because of dealing with the extra responsibilities found in the care of a sick child. People who are dealing with similar problems can provide understanding and relevant advice due to shared experiences of a similar illness. Families need to know that cancer is not a death sentence. There are solutions, providing a chance for the family and child to be fully healed and ready to move on to the happier experiences of growing up.

How to Carry Out a Paternity Test

Wondering who the daddy is? You are definitely not alone. Tens of thousands of paternity tests are done years in the USA alone. DNA Paternity testing is the most accurate and scientific way of determining who the father of a baby is.

Buying a paternity test

You today no longer need to go to a clinic or hospital to have a DNA test carried out. In line with changes in today’s consumer market, most people are buying paternity tests online where some of the leading laboratories and companies providing these types of tests operate. Once you have selected the company you wish to carry out your test and made your payment, you will be sent a home sample collection kit. All companies provide this kit and the kit does not vary very much from one company to the next. If you thought that the sample required might be blood samples, think again.

DNA has progressed so much that nowadays all you need to do is rub an oral swab inside the mouth and under the tongue to collect the DNA sufficient for a test. The kit will in fact contain oral swabs. You will also find a few basic precautions (such as not eating, drinking or smoking for one hour prior to collecting your samples) as well as the instructions: rub swabs for ten seconds under the tongue and then allow to dry. This method of sample collection is quick and painless and can easily be done by anybody. Once you have collected DNA samples for the alleged father and the child you can then just send them to the lab for testing.

Paternity test results

The results of a paternity test are extremely accurate. Rest assured that any doubts you had will be whipped away. If the alleged father is the biological father of the child, the result will express a percentage probability of paternity above 99.9%. If on the other hand, the alleged father is not the biological father of the child, the probability of paternity will be 0%.

Most paternity test companies base their analysis on a 16 genetic marker profile. This means they analyze 16 individual markers on the DNA profile of the father and that of the child. The biological child of a male will inherit all 16 of his or her genetic markers from her biological father – this means that paternity can only be confirmed if there is an exact match between the DNA profile of the child and of the father. Pregnant and need a paternity test?

Paternity testing during pregnancy or prenatal paternity testing used to be a risky business. It required the mother to undergo procedures such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, in order to get samples of the baby’s DNA from inside the womb. Besides the risk of miscarriage and injury to the baby, there was the added problem of the rapidity with which the samples collected (amniotic fluid with amniocentesis and a tissue sample with chorionic villus sampling) disintegrated. Nowadays, scientists have been able to extract fetal DNA from samples of maternal blood – a revolutionary DNA paternity test that has zero percent risk and can be done with accuracy at just ten weeks.

Preventative Care for Your Children

Anyone looking after young children knows how important high quality medical care and discount medical supplies are. The costs associated with health care continue to rise each year, so it can be challenging for families to find affordable clinics and equipment. The best thing that parents can do is keep their home safe and keep their kids as healthy as possible.

Regular visits to a pediatrician or primary care physician will help to keep the whole family feeling well. Parents should ask any questions or bring up any concerns that they may have with the doctor. Preventing an illness, or diagnosing a potential problem right away, can make a huge difference.

Children should receive vaccines on a very specific schedule. This should be discussed with the family doctor after the child is born so that they can get their injections in a timely manner. Immunizations are responsible for the eradication of diseases that were once deadly among youth. Modern medicine has advanced to the point that families no longer need to worry about many of these illnesses, so long as they choose to vaccinate and keep their kids healthy.

Doctors will track each child’s growth to make sure that they are growing properly. Delayed or inhibited growth can be an indication of a health issue. It is best to have a child’s height, weight, and head circumference measured and recorded in the first few years of life.

A complete examination should be done annually, and more often for very young children. This would include a check of the heart rate, lungs, abdomen, neck, and head. After the age of 3, blood pressure may even be checked.

Vision and hearing should be checked regularly, as well. In many cases, a vision problem may not become apparent for several years. If vision impairment is not corrected, a child can have difficulty reading. Hearing impairment can cause speech delays, so it is necessary to do a sensory screening.

During the toddler and preschool years, pediatricians will ask parents about their children’s behavior and habits. It is around this time that potty training should begin. A sleeping schedule should be in place, since plenty of sleep is crucial to good health.

There are many different ways that a parent can ensure the safety and health of their children. Checking in with a trusted family doctor is one of the most important elements. Everything from discount medical supplies, to affordable medications can help families to live a healthy life.

How about you, how do you make sure your kids are always in their best shape?

Simple Ways to Stay Motivated to Work Out When it Gets Cold

Image courtesy of photostock / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Isn’t it tempting to pull the covers over your head in the early morning as opposed to getting out of bed and going on your jog or heading to the gym? Or, even in the afternoon when it is cold as well it’s a lot easier to stay bundled up on the sofa while watching your favorite TV shows. However, your body isn’t going to get fit or enough exercise that way. That’s why it’s vital to set your own goals and make sure you’re keeping yourself motivated by implementing a healthy diet and taking your multivitamins as well.

Why Are you Working Out? – Besides answering the obvious, you work out to stay healthy and get fit. But, you also should work out because you want to work out. If you having a hard time coming up with an answer to this question, come with reasonable goals. Maybe you want to look your best for a spring or summer vacation or you’re suffering from anxiety and running and other forms of exercise alleviate your symptoms. Whatever the case may be, come up with a number of goals that will help you stay motivated and more willing to exercise on those days you’re feeling tempted to stay in bed.

Switch Up Your Routine – As the fall and winter time settle in it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and do the same exercising routine day after day. Instead of hopping on the treadmill yet again, try going to a few classes like zumba or a cycling class, for example. You may find a class that you absolutely love and you can make it a part of your weekly working out plan. Soon enough you’ll be on a schedule that you love thanks to great instructors and classes that you enjoy.

Eat Healthy and Take your Vitamins – Providing your body with the right nutrients and multivitamins will increase your energy level, therefore increasing your desire to stay fit. It’s easy to not be exposed to enough sunlight during the winter time so make sure you’re taking a vitamin with vitamin D in it. If you’re body has the right form of nutrients it will be more energized and you’ll feel more wide awake when it’s snowy and cold outside. You’ll also be more willing to drive to the gym and get a workout in!

Should You Talk To Your Children About Plastic Surgery?

The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that 53% of women and 49% of men approve of cosmetic surgery and would make no effort to conceal it if they chose to undergo a procedure. It also indicates that majority of men and women who invest in this surgery fall between the ages of 31 and 45. As these are typically child raising years, most of these people will have children. Often, for women, the surgery in question is sought to undo the inevitable, ravages of childbearing and breastfeeding. The question of whether to tell your child about the surgery, and what to say if you choose to, is a difficult one.

No one knows your children better than you do, and you are the one who has the right to make the decision, without judgment. Before you decide, however, consider some points. First, there may be some bruising and swelling. Second, your movements may temporarily be limited; you may not be able to pick up your child, or you may need some help with everyday activities. Third, consider the fact that children are often more astute than parents give them credit for. You may consider changes to be subtle, but a child may easily pick up on the before and after differences. How will you explain these things to a child who does not know what is happening? Choosing a Good Pediatric Dentist for Your Child

I guess it’s true what Belinda Carlisle says… Heaven really is a place on earth.  I can attest to that because just recently, I met a real live angel right smack in the heart of the city.  She’s my daughter’s pediatric dentist- whose name escapes my memory right now.   Her voice alone is good enough as anesthesia.  Her demeanor is simply so relaxing, that I myself wouldn’t mind having 5 teeth pulled by her all at the same time.

Why do we need to put the fate of our kids’ teeth in the hands of a pediatric dentist?  These professionals, unlike a general dentist, have additional years of training which highlight hands-on child psychology, growth and development.  What exactly do you look for in a pediatric dentist?

He or she should of course have a license to practice.  He should be knowledgeable and updated on the latest types of procedures available in treating your child’s condition.

Your pediatric dentist should know how to communicate with your child, especially during the initial visit.  He should know how to alleviate your child’s- and your- fears using the tone of his voice and facial expressions.  Some would show your kid how the dental chair moves up and down before he actually sits on it.  This is what’s called “therapeutic interaction” between the dentist and child.  Pediatric dentists are never forceful.

Location is also an important thing to consider when choosing a pediatric dentist.  You and your kid will have less anxiety if you took him to a dentist whose clinic is right in the neighborhood.  You can even take him on a quick tour prior to the actual visit.  If you live somewhere in Montreal, for instance, you can Google “pediatric dentist montreal” and come up with a list of dentists which you can check out.

Our children’s dental health is something we parents should really put a premium on.  The way we take care of our kids’ teeth now will determine how their smiles look in the future.

Skin Care For Sensitive Skin: The Search Ends Here

My high school years were probably the best years of my life.  I had so much to be excited about:  there was prom night, school fairs where I got to ogle cute boys from the all-boys school next to our school, and countless sleepovers at my girlfriend’s house.

Although those years were riddled with so much fun, there was an undertone of insecurity on my part, as I battled with acne.  Yes, I was your typical pimply-faced teenager who tried every imaginable product to solve my skin problems.  My search ended with Cetaphil.  I started using the Gentle Skin Cleanser then, and haven’t stopped since.

My love for Cetaphil continued to bloom through the years.  When I gave birth to my daughter, Cetaphil was what the hospital used to clean her newborn skin.  I continued using that on her well until her preschool years, and I must say that she has never had any case of rashes or skin infections- ever!

I know I’m not getting any younger, and that I should seriously start thinking about moisturizing my skin.  Since I have ultra-sensitive skin that tends to breakout quite easily when aggravated, I have always been hesitant to slop on any type of moisturizer on my face.  I have made history with Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 15, as this is the first ever moisturizer I’ve used.  I fell in love at first application!  I like that it’s not greasy and unscented.  It doesn’t feel heavy on your face, and amazingly, I didn’t feel the slightest itch.  This moisturizer keeps the skin hydrated while protecting it from the sun’s harmful rays.

Another product from their line which is worth trying is the Cetaphil Daily Advance Ultra Hydrating Lotion.  Again, it’s perfect for sensitive skin like mine, so I’m once again grinning from ear to ear.  It’s a lotion meant to give intense moisture to very dry skin.  It’s fragrance-free and non-greasy.  A week after I started using it, I noticed the skin on my arms is smoother.  I used to feel some bumps along the part of my forearm which hits the desk when I put my hands on my office table.  But now, they’re gone.  I use it as an after-shave on my legs as well.

At the risk of sounding like a TV commercial, I just have to say that there simply is no other product line for me… Cetaphil is it!  My search for the perfect skin care product has finally come to an end.

Secrets of Well-Rested Moms

If you think that the greatest invention ever known to man is the snooze button on the alarm clock, then you are clearly manifesting signs of lack of sleep.  Although it may be all too common to hear of moms who beg for those extra five minutes of sleep every time the alarm goes off in the morning, it is an indication that these people are not getting the rest they badly need.

The important thing sleepless moms have to do is to reprogram their bodies.  Remember, we aren’t nocturnal animals, so as much as we can, we should do all our duties during the daytime.  Owls are owls, people are people.  But if you’ve always been a night person, how exactly can you re-engineer yourself into being a morning person?

Change your wake up time.  Harsh as it sounds, you have to force yourself to stick to a new time to get up in the morning.  Try setting your alarm clock to 530am, for instance, and when it goes off, just get up even if you don’t feel like it. You must do this even on weekends when it’s so tempting to sleep in.  Eventually, your body will adjust to your new wake up time.

Don’t bite off more than you can chew.  Do you really have to take that extra writing job, even if it’ll eat up more of your time?  If you really must, then do your extra work during the day.  Squeeze it in with your regular job (like I do!), so when you come home from work, you should just spend the time winding down and relaxing.

Keep naps at bay.  If you feel the pangs of fatigue creep in throughout the day, try to keep busy instead of taking a nap.  It will only make you feel more tired.  Talk to a friend or just do something- anything!  When night time comes, you’ll be so sleepy that you’d want to hit the sack early.   This will then help you adjust to the early morning start.

Once you’ve successfully transformed yourself into a morning person, you’ll soon discover that you’re no longer that cranky mom who masterfully stifles a yawn as you drive your son to soccer practice.

Kids’ Vitamins That Rock

I’m not in any way related to Nostradamus, but I think I can boldly make a fearless forecast that my 6-year old daughter is going to grow up to be one of TIME magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People in the World.  Even at her present age, she is starting to show signs of how she manages to affect her classmates and friends.  Her sphere of influence extends from dolls, to books, and now, even to vitamins.

Vitamins?  Since when did kids love taking their vitamins?  Just recently, I introduced her to Vitapops- the first pop rocks vitamins for kids- and she instantly fell in love with it.  She brought some to school the other day, and it turned out to be a big hit with her friends as well.

Vitapops are orange-flavored vitamins which come in pop rocks form- the ones which pop, fizzle and crack inside your mouth.  It’s the first of its kind here in the Philippines.

Although it tastes like candy, it has only 1/5 of the sugar content of your usual vitamins.  And because it’s vitamin C in Sodium Ascorbate form, it doesn’t make your kid and may be taken on an empty stomach.  So it’s safe for him to take his vitamins even before he’s had his breakfast.

As my daughter steps it up a notch on the popularity scale, I’m assured that she’s getting the vitamin C her body needs.  So, I guess it’s true: being healthy CAN be fun!
