Cultivating Better Mental Health

Stress, depression and other mental health issues are becoming a ticking time bomb. Millions of people in Australia alone are struggling with their mental health as you read this and all of the indicators suggest that the problem is only going to get worse. So, it’s really important that we all do whatever we can to cultivate a sense of better mental health. Obviously, it isn’t always possible to prevent mental health conditions, but there are things we can all do to live with a little more ease and improve our lots in life…

Treat Yourself Kindly

If you don’t value yourself, then it’s so easy to see your self-esteem falling lower and lower and that can lead to a whole host of problems with your mental well-being including anxiety and depression. So, think of yourself kindly and treat yourself accordingly allowing yourself to relax, enjoy fun hobbies and generally do the things you most love for a little while each day.

Exercise More

The more you move your body, the more happy-making endorphins you release. Not only that but if you’re in better shape, you are far more likely to feel good about yourself. Then, there’s the fact that the more you push your body throughout the day, the easier it will be for you to get a sleep every night which can help to lower your risk of anxiety and depression significantly.

Educate Yourself

You don’t have to do mental health degrees online or become a therapist to learn everything you need to know about mental health – although it could certainly help you to look after yourself and give you more fulfilling career opportunities – you just need access to the internet and the local library. There are lots of excellent, easy to read books that will tell you how the mind works, what the risk factors for mental illness are and what you can do to mitigate them.

Spend Time with the People You Love

When your mental health isn’t in the best state, it can be so tempting to isolate yourself from the rest of the world and wallow alone. This is one of the worst things you could possibly do because although taking some me-time is probably helpful, there is nothing like good friend, laughter and knowing that there are people who care for you to lift your spirits, or at the very least let you know you are loved and there are people who will listen to you.

 

Help Others

 

It has become something of a cliche to say that if you help others, you will help yourself, but it really is true. When you volunteer for a good cause, no matter how hard it might be to get out of bed and get up and going, not only do you feel good about what you’re doing, but you get to meet lots of nice people along the way and your self-esteem gets a bit of a boost.

 

Make your mental health a priority today and you’ll be thankful for it tomorrow.
