When I became a mom, I knew there were going to be major changes in my life.  For one, I had to sacrifice watching Friends reruns for episodes of Peppa Pig.  Aside from that, my criteria for buying a car have also changed.  Now I have to think about what my kids need when I go around looking for a new car.  And on top of learning basic car maintenance skills, I realised I have to also master how to manage a messy car.

If you happen to be on the hunt for the perfect family car, here are some things to consider:

Safety. It goes without saying that when you have kids, the foremost thing you think about is their safety.  Make sure child safety seats fit. Added features to consider are rear view cameras and blind spot monitoring.

Size.  You only need simple mathematics to figure out that with children coming into the picture, you do need a car bigger than your college sedan. If you have a baby, see how the stroller fits in the car.  If you have soccer-playing kids, check how you can fit in their extra sports bags.  Will you be bringing bicycles in the car for weekend out-of-town trips?

Needs.  With your daily commute to and from work and the kids’ school, will you find yourself stuck in traffic for long periods? Then it might be helpful to choose a car with DVD screens in the back, to help entertain the kids.  Multiple sockets or USB ports will come in handy when your gadgets run out of power.

Budget.  With so much to spend for on other important things such as your kids’ tuition or your next family vacation, make sure that you set a budget for your intended car purchase- and stick to it!

Last but not the least, get a car that you know you’ll enjoy driving. Try to reconcile your family’s needs with your car preference. After all, you did work hard for it.
