My Perspective Project: Changing How I View Life

What do nicely embroidered tablecloths and the Dr. Phil show have in common?  They’re not at all related, but those were the two things which kept me smiling during my pregnancy (years ago!).  One of the things I picked up from Dr. Phil’s show was the adage, “There is no reality, only perception.”  It has stuck to me like crazy glue, and I think I’m going to make that my mantra for the rest of my mid-life crisis.

In essence, things become real only when we think they are.  Things become what we think.  When we’re going through a particularly tumultuous event in our lives, the pain and suffering become real only because we perceive them to be real.  The reality is, there is no suffering or pain.  I don’t know, I think I’m beginning to sound like a Buddhist monk now.

I want to do a major mindset overhaul, that’s what.  For the longest time, I’ve been a pessimist and a slave to sadness and everything else that closely resembles it.  If I keep telling myself that I have control over how I see things, how I believe them to be, then I can change my “reality”.

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, they say.  But this dog is hell bent on going through a shift in perspective.  I want to change how I view life and all its intricacies.  Let’s see if I can finally see the glass half full instead of half empty.

  1. It’s so funny that you wrote this because my most recent post was such a whine. I definitely try to stay positive but sometimes things just get to me. I’m going to redouble my efforts though because being happy is so much better than being miserable and you’re right, mindset has a lot to do with it.

  2. Good for you — you can change your life by changing your mindset because perspective is EVERYTHING!
