Optimism: An Acquired Taste

Optimism is pretty much like that spoonful of sugar- it helps the medicine go down.   A healthy dose of positive thinking helps you weather even the stormiest of storms.  It helps better equip you to handle those curve balls life sometimes throws at you.

Admittedly, I am a helpless pessimist.  In the words of Lady Gaga, yes, I was born this way.  Even when things are looking up, my thoughts always seem to inadvertently veer towards the negative.  This has caused me a lot of sleepless and sheep-less nights and a whole range of gastric disorders.  Pathetic, yes.  Hopeless?  Not entirely.

The good news is that those of my kind with the un-sunny disposition have a chance of morphing into an optimistic and cheery Mary Poppins.

If you keep practicing the art of positive thinking, eventually it will become second nature to you.  I’d like to think of it as an acquired taste.

When I started taking this wheatgrass drink a couple of months ago, I almost threw up at first gulp.  After taking it for a few more days, I soon got the hang of it and eventually liked it.  As with optimism, if we keep at it, it becomes habit forming.  Looking at the bright side of things then becomes as natural as breathing.

How do you exactly practice this art of optimism?

It helps to count your blessings.  Cliché as it may sound, it does help you realize how much you have to be thankful for.

More importantly, trust life.  Trust that the universe balances itself out.  When things go wrong, they will inevitably turn out right later on.

For someone like me, this exercise in optimism will be a constant struggle- but not in vain.  I look forward to blissful nights of sleep and diarrhea-free days.

    Couldn’t agree more, we have so many pressures and stresses in life that I don’t know how we would cope without a positive attitude and as much optimism as we can muster – and yes, sometimes we have to remind ourselves to be positive and optimistic

  3. I’ve got a good feeling about this optimism thing. I, like you, was born an eternal pessimist…but like you, I’m trying to change. As long as we are aware of ourselves, we can do anything. <<<See. I did it. Optimism!

  4. So true. It helps to remember (or say it aloud even!) that this too shall pass. Just don’t say it when things are going well-lol. The mind really is so powerful and can greatly affect not only our mood, but the tone of the day and even those around us. No one likes a griper, after all.

  5. I agree with you that it takes practice. Just like any other muscle that we are trying to develop, optimism needs to be flexed and practiced for it to be stronger. I’m not a very positive person myself and worrying is just too automatic for me. What I find helpful is reminding myself that it’s never as bad as I imagine….ever. :-)

  8. One thing for sure is that you’re not easily disappointed! My hubs is like that and he says that he’s a realist, not a pessimist!

  9. I’ve tried always to find the bright side of everything… I found focusing on WHAT COULD…I SHOULD’VE ETC–got me NOWHERE!

  11. My husband can be pessimistic too. Always pointing out problems and what’s going wrong. I find him quite annoying! I prefer to look at the bright side of things. Life is hard enough as it is.

I think blogging has helped me a lot shaping up that positive thinking habit. when I write something full of gloom I think ‘Who’s gonna want to read that?!’ and then I have to push myself to find a positive angle… or if not, let it go and focus on something else. And you know what, it is becoming a second nature now… instead of ‘This sucks’ thinking ‘What can I do about it?’ and ‘Where is the lesson in it?’

  13. I am a pessimist myself. I always see the glass as half empty instead of half full. I usually expect the worst so I will not be disappointed when something turns out that way. I try to be the reverse but that sneaky thought creeps in my mind and snatches it away. I too lay awake most times worrying and seeing the worst possible out comes. Then I kind of shake out of it and it comes back. I am working on become the opposite. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Thank goodness for Ambien on those nights! :)
