Reading Stings

A bug has just bitten my daughter. No, luckily it’s not the creepy crawly type. It’s the reading bug! I am fascinated at her love for the printed word. Every time I come home from work, she asks me not for toys, but for books. She bawls out whenever I forget to bring her home a book, so I always make it a point to remember. Here’s a brief review of one of her favorite reads:

Knuffle Bunny: a cautionary tale by Mo Willems – This Caldecott Medal winner is about Trixie, a toddler who totes along her favorite rag-doll / toy Knuffle Bunny as she and her father go on a trip to the Laundromat. The drama, or comedy, begins when Trixie realizes that her precious Knuffle Bunny has been left behind at the Laundromat.

The expressive cartoon drawings which are superimposed on actual photographs of the city provide the backdrop for this tale which somewhat reflects real life. Both parents and kids can most certainly identify with the characters. It shows how things can still go wrong, even when we adults are in charge. And when things go wrong for toddlers, it’s just total mayhem.

This is a book which you can not only read to your kid, but read with him or her as well. If you can’t find it at your kids’ school library, you can grab a copy from Fully Booked or your nearby bookstore.
