Soulmates R Us

Wouldn’t it be absolutely convenient if you could simply hop on our car and drive to the nearest Soulmates R Us outlet to find yourself the man of your dreams?   All you need to do is scour the aisles for a man whose specifications match yours and you’re good to go.  But wait, there’s more… Soulmates R Us is gender-sensitive, so if you’re the type who prefers a same-sex match, there is a special section for you.  In a perfect world, nobody is left behind.

If only it were that easy.  But we all know that life is far from easy.  You could however, take consolation in the fact that you are not alone in thinking that the universe is conspiring against your finding the man- or woman- of your dreams.  Michael Jackson was lucky he found the perfect glove to match his hand, while the not-so-fortunate among us are still on the perennial quest to find that glove-match.  We go through a series of hits and misses when diving into the dating pool, only to end up with hearts weary from all the endless heartache and disappointment.

What is a soulmate anyway?  The idea of a soulmate has its origins in the belief in reincarnation and all that karmic, cosmic energy.  I am no guru when it comes to that, so you can either believe me or think that I’m just pulling your leg.  All I know is, there is this belief that the “creator” takes a soul, and splits it in half as they each take on a human form.  They go through life, learning lessons along the way, and sometimes their paths cross.  When they do, they feel a strange connection and that they “complete each other”.

Nowadays, we often use the word “soulmate” so casually as if it were as common as a cinema “exit” sign.  We hardly even know what it really means.  We call anybody whom we fall head over heels in love with our soulmate.  We call someone we’ve locked eyes with at a coffee shop our soulmate.

However which way we want to call it, it all boils down to one thing: we are on the prowl- or, to put it more decently, on the search- for someone to make us feel whole.  We long for that Jerry-Maguire-you-complete-me person to fill our days and nights with endless wonder.  At the end of the day, we just want someone to give us a backrub and tell us that we’re gorgeous as hell.

I believe that a soul mate do exist, everybody has one. But it has been said that if you already found your soul mate, it doesn’t exclusively mean you were bound to be together for life. Sometimes, your brother/sister could also be your soul mate. Oops! Sorry for the litany. =)

Saying hi and thanking you for your lovely comment from wordsandpen.com

  4. Reminds me of Paulo Coelho’s Brida. It talks about soulmates and how one finds their own. It was quite an interesting way to describe soulmates and the process of finding one :-)

I’d say I have found mine – although it’s more like he found me :-D

    • You’re lucky you’ve found each other :) Hmmm… I’m not that much of a fan of Paulo Coelho, though… hehe

Very cute and so very true. I think I am at that “I give up” stage. I have so much going on for me, my life is great and I dont see why I need to stress of searching for my soulmate. However, if he happens to just show up at my front door.. that would be GREAT! LOL

    • It’s good that you’re not really looking right now. Yup, he just might drop from the sky on a sunny day :)

  6. Yeah, well, I found my last Soulmate in the clearance aisle, no returns or refunds.

I do have quite an opinion on the Soulmate subject, but it’s probably because I’m bitter or jaded so no offense to your other lovely commenters.

It is going to take society decades to recover from Jerry McGuire’s, “you complete me”. That should be the last thing we’re looking for. I do believe you can have amazing connections with people, that are karmic or a God-send. However, if you are waiting for someone to complete you; the relationship is doomed from the get-go, in my opinion.

I think our significant other should be assisting in our growth, supporting us, and TOTALLY giving back rubs. Life is a journey and quite the learning process; we will inevitably change throughout the course. Hopefully we can find the person that will come along for the ride instead of being complacent with the perfect image of what a relationship “should” be, or are dependent on how we make them feel.

Really, I’m rambling, and should write a post on this on my blog, instead of in the comment section of yours:)

    Great post!

    • Thanks for the insight, Cari. You do make an excellent point. Maybe I’m just not as jaded as you are, when it comes to love :).
Ok, instead of “You complete me”, can I just say, “Show me the money!!!!” :)

  8. well i believe in destiny too..and a soulmate is a part of that maybe..though i believe soulmates doesn’t always refer to your husband or wife..i trust the one i love now is my soul mate and my partner forever..and indeed, it is one of God’s marvelous works!

  9. Soul mate exists… But we need patience and intuition to find him!

  10. I do believe in soul mates although I’ve yet to find mine. I really love the way you write, your play of words end up to be so meaningful.=)

I believe in fate and what God has planned for us. The right person will be given to you at God’s time as per my belief. But I have nothing against those who believed in them. Just like those online russian brides whose fate are in the hands of online dating.

    • I don’t believe in fate. The person has a right to choose his own way and so called “fate” is only a very general life line planned for his life. Everybody meets his/her soulmate during the life. But the most difficult is to understand that exactly this person is your soulmate and not just pass by… Sadly that too often we don’t recognize our soulmate and make families with wrong persons making our life a hell.

      • Thanks for your insight. We do charter our own destiny. If we want anything to happen in our lives, we must take action and not just sit back and wait.

It’s a question if soulmates really do exist. I believe that we are ‘mated’ to a group of souls who are of special importance to us. But in the course of time this group broadens out. However, I’m enough of a romantic to believe also in the complete power of love – which can surely find and create a soulmate in one glance..

    • I guess we’ll all just end up healthier and happier if we have someone to go through life’s every tumble with :). Thanks for the visit.
