Optimism: An Acquired Taste

Optimism is pretty much like that spoonful of sugar- it helps the medicine go down.   A healthy dose of positive thinking helps you weather even the stormiest of storms.  It helps better equip you to handle those curve balls life sometimes throws at you.

Admittedly, I am a helpless pessimist.  In the words of Lady Gaga, yes, I was born this way.  Even when things are looking up, my thoughts always seem to inadvertently veer towards the negative.  This has caused me a lot of sleepless and sheep-less nights and a whole range of gastric disorders.  Pathetic, yes.  Hopeless?  Not entirely.

The good news is that those of my kind with the un-sunny disposition have a chance of morphing into an optimistic and cheery Mary Poppins.

If you keep practicing the art of positive thinking, eventually it will become second nature to you.  I’d like to think of it as an acquired taste.

When I started taking this wheatgrass drink a couple of months ago, I almost threw up at first gulp.  After taking it for a few more days, I soon got the hang of it and eventually liked it.  As with optimism, if we keep at it, it becomes habit forming.  Looking at the bright side of things then becomes as natural as breathing.

How do you exactly practice this art of optimism?

It helps to count your blessings.  Cliché as it may sound, it does help you realize how much you have to be thankful for.

More importantly, trust life.  Trust that the universe balances itself out.  When things go wrong, they will inevitably turn out right later on.

For someone like me, this exercise in optimism will be a constant struggle- but not in vain.  I look forward to blissful nights of sleep and diarrhea-free days.
