Are you smarter than a 5-year old?

We are all pretty familiar with the TV game show “Are you smarter than a fifth-grader?”. In my case, I feel my kid and I are stars in our own reality TV show, “Are you smarter than a five-year old?”

My precocious preschooler is more than a bundle of energy…she’s a package of wit as well. I’m nothing short of amazed at how much she knows at her tender age. She rants on about artificial and natural sources of light like they were characters in a Nickelodeon show. She points out to objects around our kitchen and identifies which ones are solid, liquid and gas (ok, well, maybe not the gas part).

More than academics, I’m often dumbfounded at her mature outlook on life. When she sometimes sees me frustrated over something, she gives me a reassuring pat on the back and says, “Mama, it’s ok. We all make mistakes.” My daughter is a Zen master in the making!

One can never undermine the inner workings of an inquisitive mind. My little one loves to ask a lot of challenging why’s and how’s, more than the obvious what’s. I often find myself grappling for answers.

We can attribute a child’s smarts to a lot of things: school, parental or peer influence, and the various forms of media accessible to her. As responsible parents, we should just constantly be wary of where she gets her nuggets of wisdom from, because as we know, not all information that’s out there is appropriate.
