What is the Right Amount of Online Time for Children?

Commercial Photography

As parents, we understand the necessity of our children learning about technology, using technology and being online at school for educational purposes, but where do we as parents draw the line? And how do we draw the line if our children are being home schooled? We concern ourselves with the predatory realm the darkest corners of the internet holds but there are also other factors to take into account. We should also consider cyber bullying or too much online time stunting brain growth or imagination and creativity. All of these factors are a concern for parents and rightfully so. Now the question is how do you as a parent avoid this entirely and monitor the situation? Here are some guidelines that worked for parents sitting in the same position as you find yourself in today.

Limit Your Time Online

Children watch and learn from their idols which is unfortunately us as parents with bad habits. We more often than not don’t realize what we are doing in front of our kids. This means spending less time on your phone and more time with your kids. Basically, be the internet craving, casino sites loving, Netflix addict and ice cream after midnight parent when the lights go out!

Edit Program Access on Your Smart Devices

Programs can be removed or uninstalled. Go through your laptop, desktop, smartphones and tablets to edit these programs or download YouTube Kids. Programs such as YouTube Kids allows parents to control what their children are watching, set up passwords and remove anything parents may find offensive.

Set Online Time Limits for Your Kids

Designated times of the day, allowing children to be online, not only aids in prevention but it also teaches your child about a structured routine. Choose an hour of the day where your kids will be allowed to play games, watch movies or play online. During this hour, or however long you have chosen, discreetly keep an eye on their online activities.

Monitor Browsing History

As sneaky as it sounds, it is imperative parents monitor their children’s browsing history. If your child is old enough to understand what browsing history is and even edit it, keep this to yourself. If however, your child isn’t aware of a browsers history, share that you are able to monitor it. Prevention is better than cure they say!

Child Safety Locks

There are numerous applications available to download for your child’s online safety. Look into these to keep your little one’s safe. Speak to other parents and find out what works for them. You can also get loads of information from parenting forums and blogs. The internet may be an amazing place but it may also not be ideal for younger children.

As parents we don’t want our kids to feel as if we are policing them, but if you bring them up knowing boundaries and teaching them about respect, you should find your children will be more accepting than most.

Is It Ever Too Late to Start Learning?

When was the last time you set out to learn something new? Some of us are only too happy to leave our studying days behind. We ditch the revision and plunge into the realities of working life without a backwards glance. But is that approach the right one?

Lifelong learning, and continuing to learn in later life has a whole host of benefits. It can bring great happiness, connection to a community, a sense of wellbeing and increase independence. In older citizens, the beneficial feeling of purpose can provide a counterbalance to the frustration of limited mobility or the emotional emptiness many often find in old age. And the benefits stretch beyond the mental realm into physical health, top. Research from the Alzheimer’s Society showed learning could delay the onset of the disease and reduce the dependency on support from others and even medication.

If you have elderly relatives or older friends, you may see the positives of convincing them to learn something new – but convincing them can be a problem. Going back to learning can seem intimidating, especially with the barrier of lots of new technology to find your way around – elder people will have been used to learning without tablets, computers or the Internet. Whether a person is retired or still working, learning can have a huge impact. And whether it’s attending an informal study group or going the whole way and bringing their skills to a formal degree like an online bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership. There are so many pathways and channels to keep learning going. You can choose a little or a lot – whatever your goals are there is a mode of study to suit. Even gaining the skills to start your own business as a senior can be a great incentive to keep learning.

Improving Brain Functions

The act of learning is pretty much a self-fulfilling prophecy – the more that you learn, the easier it becomes, as neural pathways in the brain become more active. Your cognitive abilities actually improve the more that you use them. Especially in older people, learning becomes an inspiring cycle, and one that has the power to improve overall mental health and slash the odds of developing brain-related illnesses such as dementia. Just as physical exercise keeps your body stronger and more supple, so mental exercise does the same for your brain, which is especially beneficial for older people.

Keeping Pace With Technology

These days, knowledge has become more democratised than ever, thanks to the power of the Internet. Accessing learning is now quite simple, and online learning is especially suited to seniors, as it can take place at home, the learner can work at their own pace and help is easily accessible. Technology that is easy and intuitive to use – like tablets which can be swiped and pressed – are a boon to those who may have fine motor skills setbacks. Taking an introductory silver surfers course can be hugely beneficial to our elder citizens, teaching them valuable new skills which can really improve their lives, such as allowing them to order shopping online or Skyping relatives who don’t live nearby. There are technology solutions specifically tailored to seniors as well, or younger family members can often be really helpful.

Helping a Friend Beat a Personal Problem

Your friend’s problem might be personal, but that doesn’t mean they need to face it and attempt to beat it alone. You can and should be helping them, as the support you offer could provide them with the assistance or even momentum they need to get their life back on track once more. No matter what your friend’s problem may be, whether it;’s addiction, depression or anxiety, advice on what you can do to help can be found below.

Help them beat addiction

Addiction is a terrible thing, and you should never allow your friend to suffer with it for too long. They might not like you for it, but you simply have to intervene in the way they are living their life, and you have to get them the support they need to overcome their plight. If this means having them move into a living space that is dedicated to the beating of drug addiction, then do it. By doing so, your friend could get the on-call, professional support they need to beat their substance abusing problem.

Help them beat depression

Whether your friend has been diagnosed with depression or not, if you see that they are not themselves and that they are, more often than not, down about life, then you need to step in. To help your friend beat their depression, first, you have to help them to understand why it is they do the things they do and why they feel the way they feel. When they figure out the meaning behind what it is they do in their day-to-day life, they’ll find the impetus they need to move on in life in as focused and purposeful a manner as possible. The most important thing that you need to do in this instance, however, is simply to listen. Ask them about how they are feeling, and truly listen to their answers. If you feel like they are hiding something, don’t be afraid to ask them again.

Help them beat anxiety

If your friend is particularly anxious about things in their life, especially if it is for no apparent reason, then, for their sake, you need to support them. When you do, just remember that it is easy to offer advice such as ‘you’ll be okay’ or ‘just snap out of it,’ as you have outside perspective on the situation. Inside their head, however, the story could be a whole lot different. For this reason, you have to listen to whatever they tell you, and you need to understand that the way they describe their plight is going to be a whole lot different to the way it looks.

If a friend of yours is struggling with a personal problem, then you should be putting as much effort into helping them beat as you would into beating it for yourself. You should do so because you’re a good friend, and you should do so because, you never know, you might need such assistance at some point in the future.

Giving Back To The Earth

There was once a time decades ago when people buried their loved ones in a natural manner without all of the extras that funeral homes offer today. This green practice of burial has still been used but has fallen by the wayside as more people want the elaborate funeral services and burial practices. A green burial La Grange IL funeral homes offer has several benefits for families as well as the home itself.

A green burial is one that offers the beauty and reverence that family members desire for their loved ones who have passed away. There are often more options with a green burial than there are with a standard method. This is an option for those who love nature and have been involved in all aspects of nature. It’s also an option for those who want a simple burial instead of one that has a lot of details that need to be arranged, which can impact the costs that are associated with a funeral and burial if you were to use a traditional method.

Funeral directors are able to interact with the family and bring back the communication with family members. There are often numerous choices that families have regarding green burial techniques and the things that are offered with the service. Options include silk shrouds that people can be buried in as well as caskets that are made of natural products, such as wicker or seagrass. Even though the body is usually not embalmed, practices are used to remove the toxicities from the body using natural methods. This type of burial shows love for the person who has passed away, family members, and the environment.

Tips in Choosing the Right Truck Cover

There are some people who do not think about purchasing truck covers especially if it is the first time that they have gotten one.  There are some places where a truck cover is not considered to be a luxury but a necessity. This will sometimes depend on the climate of the place.

Weather protection is one of the many reasons why having a truck cover is necessary. Without this, the truck may get damaged easily. What a lot of people do not realize is that truck covers can provide other benefits. For instance, a truck cover can help prevent items from getting stolen from the truck especially if the truck has a very open area that thieves can easily access. Another benefit to remember is the truck cover’s ability to get rid of, or lessen aerodynamic drag.

Choosing the right truck cover may be somewhat similar to choosing custom printed car covers. You need to pick one that you like and will fit your needs well.

To help you in making a choice, these are just some things to remember:

  • You should know the material that you want for your car cover. There are different materials that you can choose from. You can pick nylon, fiberglass, canvas, and so much more. You can choose harder materials if you would like your truck to get more protection.
  • Decide what you are going to use the truck cover for. You know that it can help protect your car but what is your main purpose for purchasing it? If you want a truck cover to give you easy access to the items inside your truck, then soft covers will be very effective.
  • Finalize your budget when purchasing the right truck cover. How much are you willing to spend for the truck cover that you want to buy? The prices differ depending on the type that you will get. The more sophisticated the type that you will pick, expect that the more expensive you have to pay in the long run.

You have already learned a lot of details about truck covers. Are you already prepared to purchase the one that you need?

A Short Guide to Choosing the Right Helmet

There are a lot of people who still think that motorcycles are meant to be used by people who have a rebellious side. But nowadays, some people realize that motorcycles are more practical- especially when they want to avoid traffic.

Take note that motorcycles are considered to be more dangerous than cars, because people who ride motorcycles do not get any protection, especially if they collide with other solid objects. If a driver collides with a tree, the driver will get hurt. Motorcycle riders have experienced serious and even fatal accidents when they do not wear the right motorcycle gear.

This is why you need to get women’s motorcycle helmets. You need to make sure that your head is protected from harm.

Choosing the right motorcycle helmets for women can be a bit daunting, but as long as you follow the tips mentioned below, you’ll see that it isn’t too complicated:

• Consider the safety features of the helmet that you want to get. There are some that will come with a protective outdoor shell. This means that the outdoor shell will help lessen the blow of the collision if you get into an accident while riding your motorcycle.

• Check out the padding of the helmet. A helmet should not only keep your head safe, but also be comfortable to use. There will be times when you need to ride your motorcycle for hours. If the helmet is not that great, then you will not enjoy it for sure.

• You also have to familiarize yourself with the different helmet types. You will usually make a decision based on what you are looking for. Do you need something that will protect you when you do extreme sports? There is a corresponding helmet for that. Get to know the different types so you can make the right choice.

• Helmet size is always going to be important. A helmet will not be comfortable if you are wearing the wrong size. If you need a small helmet, then check out this xxs motorcycle helmet to be sure. The right size will make the helmet perfect.

Are you ready to pick a proper motorcycle helmet now? Hopefully, you will make the right choice.

My Caribbean Dream: A Travel Bucket List and Guide

Now more than ever, I’m beginning to realize the importance of living a balanced life. I feel that I have been working way too much, that it’s starting to taking its toll on my health and overall outlook on life. I knew that I was on the brink of losing it, when I got impatient with my tween daughter simply showing me a video of her favorite K-pop boy band.

Then it hit me- I need to go on a vacation! Thoughts of lazily basking in the sun, as I sip a pina colada by the porch of one of those Caribbean St John homes for rent start filling my head…

If you feel that you too need to get away from it all, read on to see my bucket list of vacation destinations in the Caribbean:

To most of us, Trinidad & Tobago always go together like peanut butter & jelly. But Tobago on its own is a lovely place to visit, especially if you’re looking for a really secluded refuge.

Pigeon Point beach– the most popular beach in Tobago- is one of those idyllic beaches you can escape to. The white sand stretches as far as the eye could see, and the blue waters are unmistakably inviting. Here you’ll also find the world-famous thatch roof jetty which gives the island a pristine feel.

Cayman Islands

Swimming with stingrays sounds absolutely fun, doesn’t it? From Grand Cayman, you take a boat headed for Stingray City where you can swim in waist-deep water as stingrays swim by. What’s even more awesome is that you can get to hold and kiss a stingray (they say this brings seven years of good luck)!

Snorkeling at the Barrier Reef and Coral Gardens are other things to do here. For sure, nobody in the family will get bored.

Take the road less traveled and go on an island safari. An off road, four-wheel ride will transport you to various stunning attractions such as the Natural Bridge, California Lighthouse, and Gold Mill Ruins. Oh, the places you’ll go on a Land Rover! Safety won’t be an issue at all, as trained tour guides are always on top of everything.

After a rough road ride, you can head off to the Natural Pool and Baby Beach to take a much-needed dip.

If you’re a reggae fan like I am, traveling to Bob Marley’s hometown is definitely something you should consider. Visit the village of Nine Mile in Saint Anne Parish where Bob Marley was born, and check out Mount Zion Rock which was his favorite meditation place.

At the Half Moon Resort in Montego Bay, you can cross the sea in an unconventional way by riding on the back of thoroughbred horses as they tread water like pros.

For a thrilling adventure, you can opt to hike up to the top of Dunn’s River Falls- one of Jamaica’s national treasures. Climbing to the top of this 183-meter jungle waterfall is not for the faint of heart! When you make it to the top, you can marvel at the breathtaking view and take Instagram-worthy photos which will unabashedly make you popular among your friends.

No Caribbean travel bucket list would be complete without a trip to the Pink Sands Beach of the Bahamas. Here, the sand is as fine as talcum powder. The way the light hits the sand gives it various shades of vibrant pink. And the water is as clear as the vodka you had too much of the previous night.

Brave the deep blue by swimming with sea turtles in their natural environment. You ride a boat to the turtle habitat, and your private swim tour guide will help ease you into swimming alongside sea turtles.

After getting your sea turtle fix, you can then snorkel over shipwrecks and explore how different fish have made these artificial coral reefs their home.

Punta Cana

Back in the day, I loved watching The Flintstones. So when I learned that there’s such a thing as a Flintstones-themed attraction called Bedrock City, I didn’t think twice about adding this to my bucket list. Here you’ll find a group of caves, among which are Fred Flintstone’s villa and the famous Flintstone car.

You can likewise get a dose of Dominican culture by joining a tour where they have you ride in safari-style jeeps, and take you along the coastline of Cape San Rafael. There you’ll see firsthand how a typical Dominican peasant lives.

Saint Kitts and Nevis

If hiking up a volcano sounds like something you’d do on a dare, then St. Kitts is the place to go. The experience will have you catching your breath as you climb up to the edge of a volcano crater, over a distance of about 2.5 miles. The steep trek will take approximately two hours to finish. And then you can simply gape in awe at the marvelous beauty below.

We have only one life to live, so we must make the most of it. Fulfillment does not always have to come from how much you accomplish at work. Essentially, it’s the wealth of experience we gain from traveling and recreation which helps keep us balanced and sane.

So the next time you find yourself frantically booking the next flight to somewhere in the Caribbean, take comfort in the fact that you are doing your overall mental health– and the people around you- a huge favor.

Creating a Memorial for a Lost Pet

In a society where pets are highly valued members of the family, seeing them pass on is often difficult and painful. However, taking the time and making the effort to create a lasting memorial to the animals you have loved is an excellent way to ensure the memory of your special pet is never lost.

Physical Memorials

Honoring the memory of a lost pet is an important part of healing for the humans who loved and cared for the animal. Many families opt to bury or cremate a pet and mark the spot with an engraved stone, much like we do when humans pass on. Others take a somewhat different approach after cremating a pet by displaying the ashes in their homes or having them turned into a diamond that can then be attached to a special piece of jewelry. Of course, there are many other options available for the physical remembrance of your pet, each as a unique as the animal that has recently passed.

Written Memorials

Magazines for pet owners, veterinarians and sometimes churches often provide spaces for the publication of written memorials for a pet lost to illness, accident or old age. Dog and cat memorials of this kind typically include photos, special memories of the animal and even poetry, making it a great option for those looking for an affordable or free way to honor their lost pet. Regardless of the style of the written memorial, it is an amazing way to remember the animal while helping the owner begin to heal from the loss of their beloved cat, dog or other pet.

Healing Begins with Remembering

While the loss of a pet is extremely painful, taking the time to create a special way to remember that furry family member is an incredible way to both honor the animal and begin the healing process. While many memorial choices are somewhat costly, there are plenty of other options available to those who are on a tight budget. Plan your memorial today to ensure that your beloved pet will be remembered.
