Show Me the (Blogging) Money!

As Carly Rae Jepsen’s highly infectious Call Me Maybe ditty continues to play in my head, I think about where I’m at, and where I’m going with regards to blogging.  It’s been one and a half years since I started on this journey, and it’s time I contemplated on my blogging goals- if I had any.

Looking back, I was like a fish out of water, struggling to navigate my way through the blogosphere.  With the help of a blogger friend, I started taking baby steps towards creating my own blog.  She helped guide me through the process of buying a domain name and getting a webhosting service.

I thought blogging was only about writing something people would find interesting enough to read.  I couldn’t be more wrong.  I was slightly overwhelmed by all the things I had to learn.  I suddenly experienced a deluge of terms such as page rank, SEO, backlinks, etc.  There were so many aspects to blogging that were alien to a neophyte like me.

Now, I’m faced with the inevitable question:  what are my blogging goals?  How do they fit in with my interests and lifestyle in general?

Initially, I wanted an outlet for my thoughts and feelings.  I knew it was time to ditch my Hello Kitty journal and move on to the more high-tech world of blogging.

Looking to the future, I know that I could somehow make a living out of this blog.  The spirit of entrepreneurship runs in the family, and I believe this will be my contribution.

If I want to make a business out of this, I know I should work harder.  That would mean signing up for directory submission sites in order to put my blog out there.  This method proves to help websites gain higher rankings, and gain quality traffic.  I will also have to learn the ropes of SEO.

Who knows? I just might come up with an e-book or something.

  1. Well, let us all know what you come up with! I know what you mean though…I also just want my blog to be an online journal for my kids and all of a sudden, I get thrown into all kinds of stuff I never heard before from memes to SEO!! Still have to figure what the latter means!! :D

  2. Good luck, Pepper. I hope you meet every single goal you set out to, and then some!

Errrr, is this the right venue to say that directory submissions don’t really do anything to your PR anymore? Google doesn’t count them as valued backlinks but it’s probably a great way to gain more exposure for your blog. Hugs to you! :D

  4. The title made me laugh. I’ve been feeling the same way. I do write goals every year and review them, but taking it to another level is a must for me. Good luck and can’t wait to see your success!

you surely have gone a long way moms. you are a prolific writer. sometimes, i think nga, i should focus more on the writing first and then the earning thingy second. coz my writing is deteriorating, to say the least! waaa

  6. right now my blogging goals are to have fun–I never go into this for money =) Best of Luck to you.

  7. I’ve been thinking the same thoughts over and over. Sometimes I even start working harder… until I realise that the hard work takes the fun out of it. I wish there were some shortcuts out there…

  8. Go for it sister, but think of little ol’ me when you are up there and famous … And i’m still struggling to find out what a page rank is :-)

  9. I have been blogging for some time now but I still don’t know anything about SEO and how to get the site to the top ; p Well, I hope when you find out, you can share the secret to your readers!

  10. I’m actually envious of your PR3.
Google, give me back my Page Rank! :)

  11. Pepper, I have always thought you have great potential, and are a great writer! It does really all come back to that–writing for your readers, and then you just need some Google loving on the side;) I hope you take a look at Club-Content, because I think you would have so much to offer there!

    • Thanks for the compliment. Coming from you, that means a lot to me :)
Yes, I’m definitely going to check out Club-Content. Thanks :)

  12. UGH! After a year and a half of blogging, I think I’ve made about $75! It’s pathetic! So I just blog away since I finally found my niche and wait for that famous person to find my blog and offer me a movie deal :)

    • With your sense of humor, you could give Ellen DeGeneres a run for her money. Why don’t you go down that road? Don’t forget me when you’re famous, ok? :) – as if you aren’t already famous!

  13. I’ve been blogging since around 2009 & the SEO still has me confused. Maybe you can write an e-book in terms I can understand :)

    Stopping by from VoiceBoks!

  14. You’re a talented writer, I hope you continue.

Pepper I just know you will succeed! You not only have goals and aspirations, you have drive! Got get ’em! Grace, peace and blessings, Carla.

  16. Blogging is hardwork talaga (if you want to make money out of it). Every blogger should learn SEO stuff in order to get good stats. And you’re right, that includes submitting your blog to directories.

  17. I am totally new to the blogging world, and kind of jumped into this blindly. Initially, I wanted my blog to serve as a forum for me to connect with other mom’s who had similar experiences to mine, and maybe had overcome the same hurdles that I’m going through. I’ve been able to achieve that, and really love connecting with people who have so much insight. What I didn’t expect was just how much fun it is and how much more there is to it. It is a very complicated world, and some day I would love to take it to the next level. Good luck to you as you take yours to the next level!!! I’ll be watching and trying to learn from your success. :)

    • I am happy that I’m able to connect with you through blogging. We both are in the same situation, so it does help me, knowing that I’m not alone.

  18. Blogging money is an elusive beast. I haven’t seen it. Does it really exist? :D

  19. Good Luck. You are well on your way to reaching your goals. Writting them down is the first step.

  20. Pepper, I wish you the best of luck with your blogging goals. I’m in the same boat. I’m still trying to figure out the mystical secrets to SEO…!

  21. Best of luck, Pepper. I hope you will get success in your every step of your life and your work.

  22. I hope you don’t quit. Blogging can be difficult, yes, but with your skill in writing, I think you will soon be known in the community :)
