What To Do When Naming a Baby

Naming a new born can either be a very easy task or a very hard task. Some parents are able to decide on a name even before they know there having a baby, while some can’t decide no matter how much help they get. So here are a few tips just in case you are one of those parents that can’t decide.

  • Don’t leave the decision too late, Talk to your partner about it over dinner well before you even know you are going to have a baby, this will allow you to know what they think and can give you a basis to start building ideas.
  • Ask the influential people in your life. Do you have a traditional family name you want to carry on? Is there a name special to your close friends or family that they might want to suggest?
  • Don’t make a hasty decision just to get it out of the way. If you are unsure keep thinking about it even if you have to leave it up to the last minute, because the worst thing you can do is make a decision you might later on regret.
  • Make sure you go through a comprehensive list! If you decide too soon and later on you find a name more suitable, then you will feel absolutely gutted.
  • There are hundreds of websites to help you choose, they offer vast lists of names and a wealth of other information such as name origins or matching sibling names.
  • Make sure you have a backup name of the opposite sex because you will be surprised how many times a doctor says it’s a boy and then turns out to be a girl (or vice versa).
  • The best thing that you can currently get is the IPhone app by bounty. It allows you to browse through all the names in their updated list. It allows you to share the list with your friends, and even gives you a list of the most popular names in your area.

These are great tips. There seems to be a preggers epidemic at my church so I’ll be sharing this post for sure.

We got the name for my first child from a Tolstoy book my husband was reading to me. The other name was about deciding which iteration of Peter Max. We settled on Pierre Maximillian. In hindsight, I wish we would have agreed on Jean-Pierre Maximillian. Every so often, I think I’m about to legally change it but it’s all good.

Naming a baby always is trouble with new parents

  16. those are really nifty tips, especially for soon-to-be-mums racking up their brains for suitable baby names!

in my case, it was the little one’s dad who gave the second name + i supplied the first. i wanted “brandon” so badly, but his dad won’t agree, so we settled with “ethan,” instead. his second name, though, was serendipitous, as i’ve always dreamed of naming my child “Jared.” his dad got it from his favorite 30 seconds to mars vocalist! ;)
